Profile

The Chief Commissioner is the Administrative Officer and the Superintendent of all National Colleges of Education, Teacher Training Colleges and Teacher Professional Development Centers. The activities of the teacher education section which is consisted of two branches, National Colleges of Education Branch and Teacher Education Administration Branch are performed under the Chief Commissioner (Teacher Education).  

The duties related to the post of Chief Commissioner (Teacher Education) are currently performed by Mrs. B.G.I. Kalani Hemali. She is a class one officer of the Education Administrative Service and has entered to her professional life starting as a National Pedagogical Diploma holder from Pasdunrata National College of Education. Furthermore, she is a holder of Bachelor of Science degree (Hons.) from the Ruhuna University. She has obtained the Post Graduate Diploma in educational management and the Master of Education from Colombo university and also Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Management from the National Institute of Education.  

She has an experience of 33 years in the education system and has previously worked as a teacher, Assistant Director of Education, Deputy Director of Education and also as the Deputy Principal of Sirimavo Bandaranayake College in Colombo. Before appointing to this post, she served as the Director of Education (Teacher Transfers) in the Ministry of Education. During that period, she covered the duties of the post of Chief Commissioner (Teacher Education) until a permanent officer is appointed.  

Similarly, she is a public officer with a lot of experience working with the institutions related to education such as British Council and Room to Read and also with the projects like KOIKA, GEM, JIKA and GTZ.
