Conducting annual census of government schools (national schools and provincial schools). The information about schools, students and teachers prevailing on the census date are collected here.

Conducting the census on the private schools approved by the Ministry of Education aligned with the government school census. Here also the information about schools, students and teachers are collected.

Conducting the census on Pirivenas. Here, the information on Primary Pirivenas, Maha Pirivenas and Vidyayathana Pirivenas and the details of students and teachers prevailing on the census date are collected.

In the government school census, revising the data files at zonal level and preparing the final data files of provincial and all island school census.

Preparing statistical charts and issuing them to the relevant sections after formulating the updated / final data files.

Preparing necessary school lists and statistical charts and provide them according to the requests of branches of the Ministry of Education,affiliated institutions, provincial and zonal offices.

Providing Micro data files with final data files to provincial and zonal offices for the future use of data requirements.

Preparing and providing necessary statistical charts according to the requests of other government institutions (such as the Department of Census and Statistics, Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Provincial Councils, District Secretariats and Education Commission)

Preparing and issuing the necessary statistical charts upon the requests from university lecturers, researchers, students engaged in researches, private institutions and general public.

Preparing the annual school census report based on the school census data and publishing it on the web site of the ministry and the web site of the Department of Census and Statistics for the utilization of data users.

Issuing the census numbers to newly established government schools, government approved private schools / branch schools of them, Pirivenas / Seela Matha Education Institutions and other private schools (including international schools) according to the requests of the heads of those institutions.

Coordinating the work of obtaining the data from other census / surveys / data collections conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics for the requirements of education field.

Fulfilling the data requirements of the Ministry of Education and other partners in the field of education and providing the knowledge of experts when it is required.
